Introduction about Civil Engineer

There are different types of engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. In my opinion, civil engineering is the best branch of engineering. Civil engineers use their knowledge to supervise and plan cost construction projects such as airports, roads, bridges, dams, canals, tunnels, highways, levees, irrigation, Sewage systems and waste water systems.

As well, they also collaborate with architects to design and construct different types of building. In fact, they focuses on the Infrastructure necessary to support a civilized society, for examples the Roman aqueducts, the great European cathedrals and the earliest metal bridges were built by highly skilled forerunners of the clever civil engineer. Most of civil engineers are involved with have an impact on the environment.

Becoming pathways

Now we consider becoming pathways in civil engineer position in Sri Lanka becoming civil engineer usually begins with secondary education level. To become civil engineer they have to pass sender ordinary level and advance levels and you have to earn credit pass in Math and Science streams in GCE (O/L) and passes in three Subjects on math’s or tech in GCE (AL). After next apply for government campus or private campuse.

As well , Followings are several most recommended successful paths to become professional civil engineers Sri Lanka

  1. complete a course or a diploma level on civil engineer examples ,HNDE at SLIATE,NDES at IET,NDT at ITUM ,DTEC conducted by open university Sri Lanka ,HND
  2. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exams as as you are eligible soon
  3. Bachelors degree in civil engineering
  4. High school Math, Science and Hamantions course Civil Engineer
  5. complete 3 years or 4 years engineering degree programmes.
  6. Graduate with civil engineering degree from government university Sri Lanka.

what needed qualifications

  • The first step is to obtain bachelors’ degree in civil engineering
  • During studies, should complete coursework covering fundamental engineering principles, mathematics, physics, Structural analysis, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering and other relevant core subjects.
  • Essential that gain practical experience through internships or cooperative education programme.
  • In many regions and countries, civil engineers must be licensed to offer their services to the public.

Why important to higher and higher selected way
Now we consider about advantages and disadvantages from this job.

Advantages

  • creativity

Civil engineering jobs can interest creative people. It facilitates opportunities for expressing creativity in work place.
Civil engineering offers ample opportunities for creative problem-solving and innovation. Engineers in this field are tasked with finding practical and efficient solutions to complex challenges in designing and constructing projects. They need to consider various factors such as safety, functionality, aesthetics, and environmental impact.

Civil engineers employ their creativity to develop innovative solutions that address the unique requirements of each project. They analyze and design structures that can withstand various forces, optimize transportation systems for efficient traffic flow, and develop sustainable water and energy management systems. This requires thinking outside the box, considering alternative approaches, and applying novel engineering techniques.

  • Potential Career Growth

Civil engineering offers significant potential for career growth and specialization. As engineer, gains experience and expertise, they can progress in their careers and take on more challenging and responsible roles. They may move from entry-level positions to project management or leadership positions, overseeing teams and managing projects.

Moreover, civil engineering have the opportunity to specialize in various areas within the field. They can choose to focus on structural engineering, transportation planning, geotechnical engineering, water resources, environmental engineering, or urban planning, among others. Specialization allows engineers to become experts in their chosen fields and open doors to unique and specialized career paths

  • Good salary packages

The majority of civil engineers earn a salary between 51, 758 LKR and 177, 348 LKR per month in 2024 in Sri Lanka.
After going 5 years of work experience , their income will be between 71,363 LKR and 131, 997 LKR per month.
Civil engineer’s pay is above average compared to other engineers disciplines USA itself.

  • Civil engineering is a well respected profession in society.

These infrastructure projects provide vital services and amenities that support economic growth, transportation, and public safety. For example, civil engineers design efficient transportation networks, enabling people and goods to move, reducing congestion, and improving accessibility. They develop sustainable water supply and wastewater systems, ensuring clean and safe water for communities. Civil engineers also design resilient structures that can withstand natural disasters, safeguarding lives and property.

Disadvantages

According to my knowledge, construction sites present different challenges for civil engineers and site engineers. The dynamic nature of construction projects can lead to logistical constraints, installation issues and environmental concerns. Addressing these challenges are crucial for the successful completion of projects while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Civil engineers often face the daunting task of managing and coordinating the diverse activities on construction sites, making it essential for them to develop effective solutions to tackle those challenges.

  • Long working hours

Civil engineering often face long working hours that extend beyond the standard 40 hours work week.
Alongside lot of responsibilities, you need to meet deadlines and obligations of contract which can be stressful at times.

  • As a civil engineer, there is a small room for them, be it in construction or in putting together the documents. Since most of civil structures are hard to rebuild given the cost associated with it, even the small error can be very costly. This can incur huge responsibility and liability.
  • Risk of Injury on construction sites or site visits.

Construction sites are inherently dangerous places with a high risk of injuries due to falling objects, machinery mishaps or unexpected site conditions.

  • civil engineers often have to travel to different locations for week
  • Handing labor problems, legal disputes, protests by local during project working.
  • Unlike service industry, they can be limit on how much you can earn. We can see people getting millionaires of billionaires making an app or movie stars getting rich overnight easily with single hit. But, that’s not possible in this profession. However, once you reach a respected level in career and own a consulting company, you can make hefty income as projects with huge amount of money are handled.

Despite all these disadvantages, civil engineering is still a very attractive profession considering all its advantages.

Consolations

In conclusion, I would like to say that civil engineering is a vital field that contributes to the development of modern society in different a ways. The field provides important job opportunities and is continually involving to meet the challenges of the future. Actually, the field has become more interdisciplinary with civil engineers working closely with architects, environmental scientists and transportation planners to create comprehensive infrastructure solutions. At the end, I like to say civil engineers are essential to society as they contribute to the development of infrastructure that enhances the quality of life of communities and provides a safe and sustainable environment for the future.
